Haryana Elections 2014 |
Contrary to the general perception that Khap leaders who hold sway on rural folks are grounded and belong to humble background, the disclosure of assets by Khap leaders contesting the Haryana assembly elections reveal that they all are 'crorepatis'.
According to the norms of Election Commission of India, a candidate contesting Lok Sabha or assembly elections is bound to declare his and his spouse's assets in the nomination form.
Hindustan Times scanned the affidavits of three Khap leaders fielded by Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Lok Dal from Meham, Baroda and Beri assembly segments and found all of them to be 'crorepatis'.
Shamsher Singh Kharkara (54) -- who is contesting on BJP ticket from Meham assembly segment and is head of Aithgama (a cluster of eight villages in Meham) -- has declared his total assets valued at Rs. 26 crore in the assembly poll affidavit. Kharkara, who in 2014 Lok Sabha polls had contested from Rohtak seat on INLD ticket, in April, had declared his movable and immovable assets worth Rs. 24 crore.
He has an agriculture land at Kharkara village (his native village), Balambha village (Rohtak district) and at Mirkan village in Hisar district-- all valued at Rs. 8 crore, while his residential property in form of plots at Gurgaon are valued at Rs. 6 crore. He also owns a Mercedz car valued at Rs. 12 lakh.
Similarly, Santosh Ahlawat Dahiya (48), the INLD candidate from Beri assembly segment, has declared her assets worth Rs. 4.5 crore. She is a native of Dighal village and is married to Bijender Singh Dahiya of Rohana village in Sonepat district.
Sanotsh, the first women wing president of Sarv Khap Sarv Mahapanchayat, is another Jat clan candidate in poll fray and has got an agriculture land at Palwal village in Kurukshetra and Rohana village in Sonepat worth Rs. 72 lakh.
The couple also has plots at Kailash Nagar and at Sector-4, Kurukshetra. The duo works in Kurukshetra University.
Santosh -- a Phd holder in physical education and her husband -- owns a Ritz car, a Santro car and jewellery valued at Rs. 9.5 lakh. The couple also has a 1,500 square yards industrial plot in Kurukshetra worth Rs. 50 lakh.
Baljit Singh (60), head of Gathwala Khap from Aahulana village near Gohana, is the official candidate of BJP from Baroda segment. Singh, who has been representing traditional Malik gotra seat, has declared his assets worth Rs. 5 crore. He owns a Toyota Innova car valued at Rs. 8 lakh.
Commenting on the burgeoning assets of the Khap leaders, former Delhi University professor DR Chaudhry said gone were the days when they used to command immense respect owing to their integrity in society, as the new crop of Khap leaders seemed to be more inclined on milking the clout for their vested interests.
